I recently started over in Asheville, North Carolina, after living in California for 40 years and operating my coaching business for 21 years. It was daunting thinking about starting over somewhere new, but here’s what I learned:
- Relationships are everything.
When I knew I was moving to Asheville, the first thing I did was post on Facebook and ask my friends, “who do you know in Asheville?” They sent me 42 people. I started calling those people and setting up one on one meetings. That alone led me to having a core group of amazing friends and a bunch of great business contacts.
- Ask for help.
The people in Asheville are incredibly welcoming and generous. Even though asking for help is not easy for me, everyone I met was willing to introduce me to someone else who could help me find places to speak or networking groups to join.
- Explore what is here.
I checked out all the meetups in this area for entrepreneurs and women’s networking events. I like networking in general, so this part was not that hard for me. I found a few groups that have been essential to launching my business into this community.
- Make offers.
I offered to do a six-month series on entrepreneurial empowerment at a co-working space nearby. This was a great opportunity, as I was able to promote these talks to everyone I met. Doing this for six months has led to a consistent flow of leads and many people who became clients.
I volunteered to co-host a meetup for 1400 conscious entrepreneurs, called “Being in Business” and I became a mentor for the Venture Asheville Chamber program. Volunteering is a very easy way to meet fantastic people. Even though I am giving my services away for free, I always get more than I give.
- When in Rome…adjust your fees.
This was a serious challenge for me at first because I was used to California pricing and I didn’t realize that Asheville was such a different market. But once I realized that, and I surrendered to the reality here, I adjusted the pricing and filled up my mastermind almost overnight.
Starting over can be challenging but if you try some of these suggestions, I think it can be fun and exciting. I’d love to hear what you have also learned in your adventures in starting over.
